What are Web Application Scoped resources in SharePoint?

I’ve just been working with some colleagues to fix a WSP which was failing when deployed time with the following error message:

‘The solution does not contain any resources scoped to a particular web application’

Whilst looking at the solution we could not see any features that were scoped to a particular web app but our batch file calling STSADM was specifying a URL to deploy to. It turned out that the manifest.xml had changed and <SafeControl> tags removed – this meant we didn’t need to deploy it to a particular web app anymore!

In the light of this I’ve decided to do a quick blog post explaining exactly what is classed as a web application resource:

  • Assembly destined for Bin directory
  • Feature set as WebApplication scoped
  • App Resource Files (.resx)
  • Web.config modifications (e.g. SafeControl entries)

Hope this helps! Smile
