On Saturday 2nd October 2010 the UK saw it’s first SharePoint Saturday – an event which occurs almost every weekend in America. The event was organised by Intelligent Decisioning and Lightning Tools. It was a brilliant day packed full of awesomeness – Speakers, Sessions, Buffet Lunch and SharePint after.
The main thing was it was all free – yes free!
Among the speakers we were honoured to have some SharePoint Celebs from across the pond come and join us for the day – Joel Oleson and Mark Miller. Joel Oleson did ‘MOSS 2007 to SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Best Practices’ and Mark Miller talked about ‘Building Community in SharePoint’.
Mark Miller did a brilliant Keynote speech with a Lord of the Rings twist – this was one presentation I won’t forget for a long time!
Joel Oleson then took over and explained why ‘SharePoint is Plastic’ – this included some brilliant photos (Robot Barbie!) and YouTube videos.
Our very own Mark Macrae also did a presentation on BI in SharePoint entitled ‘Business Intelligence Armoury – What’s the Best Tool for the Job’ where he demoed all things BI including PerformancePoint, SSRS, Bing Maps etc..
As well as the sessions there was also plenty of prizes to be won including Microsoft Press Books, Gift Vouchers and an Xbox and an Apple iPad!
Everyone I spoke to gave great feedback on the day and the only gripes were small things like lack of Wi-Fi.
It’s events like these that I think demonstrate how passionate and enthusiastic the SharePoint community is – especially the fact that we were all willing to give up our Saturday to attend.
We are already looking into the possibility of another one next year based on the feedback we have received – please leave feedback in the comments below and it will be gladly reviewed.
